Top science conference boost for University of Manchester

Top science conference boost for University of Manchester
September 2011

The University of Manchester is fast becoming a popular venue for some of the world's top science conferences.

Just weeks after welcoming hundreds of delegates from all over the world for the Rutherford Centenary Conference on nuclear physics - and days after staging the International Chromosomes Conference, the University is this week playing host to two more top meetings.

At University Place, 800 professionals from right across the continent are discussing the latest developments in aerosol science including aerosol based nanotechnology, aerosol chemistry and atmospheric aerosol and particle-lung interactions. The European Aerosol Conference continues until Friday (4th-9th September).

Meanwhile around 100 delegates are being welcomed to the historic Hulme Hall as The Linguistics Association of Great Britain stages its annual conference (7th-10th September). The four-day meeting also welcomes two top American academics. Professor Mark Liberman from the University of Pennsylvania will deliver The Henry Sweet Lecture 2011 under the title 'Towards the golden age of speech and language science'. And The Linguistics Association Lecture 2011 will be delivered by Professor Colin Phillips from The University of Maryland with the title 'What is a mental grammar?'

Layton Quinton, Marketing Manager for Conferencing at the University, says: "University Place and Hulme Hall are two very different venues but both very attractive in their own way.  The state of the art University Place is situated right in the heart of the city while the historic Hulme Hall, though close to the city centre, is an oasis of calm with period buildings set among  landscaped lawns and gardens.

He added: "The fact that we can host two very high profile conferences of this calibre at the same time shows the adaptability of the University and its many different meetings spaces."
