Bristol's University's Victoria Rooms host gorilla spectacular!
October 2011

The University of Bristol's Victoria Rooms played host to a spectacular auction on September 29, when a staggering £427,000 was raised for charity through the sale of 60 individually painted life size gorilla sculptures.

These hugely popular Wow! Gorillas have been a welcome and entertaining addition to Bristol landmarks over the summer, catching the imagination of residents and tourists alike.

On an unseasonably balmy night, 550 people packed the classic Clifton venue and witnessed an individual gorilla, painted in tribute to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, go for an incredible £23,000. By the interval, takings had already exceeded the expected total of £100,000!

University of Bristol Conference Office Manager Lisa Hudnott says:"The Victoria Rooms made an ideal venue for this stunning event, with plenty of space for both gorillas and participants alike. It is an iconic venue that a lot of local people have affection for and we are delighted the event proved such a runaway success."

The University even bought a gorilla, which will find a home on the University precinct by the new science building.

Celebrating Bristol Zoo's 175th birthday, the gorillas were created by Wild Art, painted by local artists then placed in an art trail throughout the city, each sponsored by a local business.

Proceeds are being shared by Bristol Zoo's gorilla conservation programme, and the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal for the Bristol Childrens Hospital Cardiology Unit.
